Student Responsibility

This is a list of the basic responsibilities students have when taking a GHC online course.

Attendance:

At the discretion of the faculty member, students are required to attend a mandatory on campus orientation and/or complete an online orientation provided within the course. In addition, students are expected to login to their eLearning course within 7 days of the start of classes.  Any student who does not complete the required orientation and/or does not login to the course with 7 days of the start of the semester is subject to withdrawal from the course.

Early Warning Program

Georgia Highlands College requires that all faculty members report their students' progress throughout the course of the semester as part of the institution-wide Early Warning Program (EWP).  The objective of the program is to support academic success by reviewing early indicators of satisfactory student progress.  In accordance with EWP, faculty members provide the Registrar's Office with academic reports of each student enrolled in their course(s) at checkpoints staggered throughout the semester.  The following success factors are reported at their corresponding checkpoint:

Week 2: Notification of Non-attendance

For Web and DVD classes, students will be considered non-attending if

A) they have not logged into the course Web site within 7 days of the start of class, and
B) they did not attend or complete the required class orientation (However, contacting the instructor may be considered meeting this requirement)

Week 5: Evidence of Course Pursuit

Week 8: Mid-term Grades


Login expectation:

 All students are expected to login to their eLearning course’s Web site during the first week of the course.  Any student who does not login during the first week (7days) is subject to withdrawal from the course.  Students are expected to login into their eLearning course at least twice a week.

Technical expectations: 

All eLearning students are expected to have access to a reliable computer and Internet provider.  While GHC provides computers for students use, access to these are limited by the hours that the College is open. Therefore, it is recommended that all eLearning students have their own computer and Internet service.  Lack of access to online service or publisher programs used in a course is not an acceptable reason for submitting assignments late or requesting an extension in due dates. Students who wish to enroll in a GHC eLearning course must understand that access to the course via the Internet is a fundamental course requirement. While GHC does provide computer/Internet access at all teaching sites, it is still the responsibility of the student to either utilize these resources or arrange suitable Internet access to participate in eLearning courses.

eLearning students are expected to have good computer and technical skills.  Professors are not responsible for solving a student's technical issues or computer problems which are outside of the learning management system.  eLearning students are expected to solve their technical difficulties with their computer, Internet access, or other issues which are outside of the control of GHC staff.  Consideration or accommodation may not be made for computer skills deficiencies or technical issues.  Saying "my computer did not work" or "my DSL line was down" or similar comments will not release eLearning students from the responsibility of submitting assignments by the due dates. While there may be a range of dates for all assignments, it is suggested that eLearning students do not wait until the last hour to submit any of their assignments. 

Computer backup plan

It is highly recommended that eLearning students have a reliable backup computer and Internet access plan should their primary computer or Internet service have technical difficulties.  Keep in mind that there are computers available to student use at each of the GHC campuses. However, these are only available when the campuses are open.

Basic Computer Requirements and Skills

The Advanced Learning Technologies division has a Web page that lists the minimum requirements in terms of computer hardware and skills you need to be successful in a course. Remember that while ones computer skills many improve, it is not the goal or purpose of a GHC Online course to teach students basic computer skills. Therefore, it is highly recommended that eLearning students have the following skills before taking an online course:

       I. Internet Skills

  1. Use a Web browser (Firefox or Internet Explorer not AOL)
  2. Be able to decipher a URL (i.e. http://www.alt.usg.edu/ecore/fc/computer-reqs.html)
  3. Be able to use Google search engine
  4. Manage Bookmarks or Favorites

     II. Email Skills

  1. Send an email message to someone not in your address book
  2. Add someone to your address book
  3. Open an email message
  4. Reply to an email message
  5. Attach a document & send to someone in an email message
  6. Open an attached document that someone has sent to you in an email

 

     III. General Skills

  1. Manage files (find, copy, edit)
  2. Download & install software from a website to your computer
  3. Create a document using Word
  4. Use a help system to solve a problem or figure out how to do a task that you do not know how to do (i.e. add a header with page numbers and file name to a Word document)
  5. Install Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer

     IV.  Hardware

  1. The computer used needs to be sufficient enough to render modern web pages, and play video and sound.
  2. It is strongly recommended that eLearning students have broadband Internet service. There are several service providers available that offer high speed connections which will enable the downloading of required web pages without hesitation.
  3. It is strongly recommended that eLearning students preform regular standard updates and maintenance on their computer and have virus detection software installed, active, and up-to-date.

Textbooks and software:

Students in eLearning courses are expected to have in their possession or access to any required textbooks, software or other materials no later than the last day of the drop/add period of a semester.  Students must be aware that required course materials will be needed to complete course assignments.  Faculty are not required to change assignment completion dates for students who fail to acquire course materials in a timely manner. 

Email:

Students are expected to check their D2L and GHC email at least twice a week on non-consecutive days. 

Verification of Online Identity:

Georgia Highlands College, through its faculty and staff, reserves the right to verify the identity of any student in an eLearning course by means approved by the University System of Georgia.

Disability Statement

If anyone in an eLearning class feels that he/she needs accommodation due to a disability, please feel free to discuss this with the instructor early in the term. Georgia Highlands College has resources available for students with certain disabilities.
