Education

Welcome to the School of Social Sciences pathway of study in Education. Georgia Highlands College offers an Associate of Science degree in Early Childhood Education, Middle Grades Education, & Special Education. Students planning to teach at the secondary level can complete the program of study in the discipline in which they plan to teach. We are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, commonly referred to as SACS

The program of study in Education offers a broad overview of the foundations of education, the diversity of students in American schools, current issues in education, and theories of teaching and learning. The coursework focuses on the content needed to serve as a teacher in the public and private schools of Georgia and the United States. Courses also provide the student with common methods and strategies used in classrooms. Using critical thinking skills, reflection, and analysis of content, students develop their own philosophy of education. Courses also provide practical knowledge for issues such as certification, required teacher tests, and employability skills in education. Each course has a Field Experience component, in which the student participates in a structured setting with children.

Students and graduates of the program can go on to traditional four-year colleges and universities to obtain baccalaureate degrees.
