Student Webspace

Disclaimer:
Student web pages are considered unofficial college pages. The content of these pages is not representative of opinions of the college, but of the user and owner of each web space. These pages are available to enrolled students on a space basis. These pages must comply with state and federal laws and college policies and procedures. If these pages violate any of these statutes, policies, or procedures, the user account will be suspended, the web space deleted, and user information turned over to the Vice President for Student Development. Owners of these pages are responsible for content, maintenance, and backup of data.

Web Page Space
Students can now try their hand at web page development. Each student account now has an email account, the ability to activate remote ISP capabilities through RomanNet, and student web space. This web space consists of 6 megs of web space on a first-come, first-served basis.

Access to Web Space
Your web page can be accessed via a web browser at the following URL: http://shadow.highlands.edu/~username (~ = the tilde). To build this web page you will need to use some web page generating software or even straight html (hyper text markup language) using notepad or wordpad. Then these files have to be transferred from your local machine to the student web server. For this you will need a file transfer program, such as WS-FTP. There are many others available. There are also many tutorials available on the web for designing simple pages. Any of these programs can be searched for with the popular web search engines or try Download.com.

Example Of Sending Files Using WS-FTP
1. Launch the program.
2. Click on new.
3. Give the site a profile name. (ex: username)
4. Give the host address or domain. - shadow.highlands.edu
5. Username: (ex: jsmith - student assigned username - no tilde)
6. Password: student assigned username
7. Save: Click this box if you wish for the program to remember your password.
8. Press Connect
9. You get a two-frame window. The left frame - this is your hard drive. Change directory locations to copies of your local files. The right frame - this is your web space on the student web server. Change into the html directory for access to your web files. There are currently two files, one is a graphical logo of Georgia Highlands College and the other your default web page, index.htm .
10. You can edit this index.htm file to change the content or simply start over with a blank index.htm file. Store your web files in this location.
11. Once you have moved the local copies of your files to the student web server you can view your web page at http://shadow.highlands.edu/~username

Troubleshooting And Tips
1. The default web page is index.htm (not index.html)
2. You have 6 megs of space for file storage (picture files take up a good deal of space)
3. The domain of the student web server is: shadow.highlands.edu (no www in front of this)
4. Your username and password to access the web space is the same as your student account or email.
