Learning Support Rules and Regulations

Learning Support is a statewide program designed to help students progress academically. Learning Support courses carry Institutional credit only, which means that grades are not computed in the semester grade point average or in a transfer or graduate average. However, these courses prepare students for credit-level courses ahead.

A rigid set of policies from the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia governs Learning Support. The following policies are most important to Learning Support students.

  1. During each semester of enrollment any student (full or part-time) must first register for all required Learning Support courses before being allowed to register for other courses. Students requiring developmental courses in two or more areas may be allowed to enroll in two Learning Support courses along with an "activity course."  Activity courses at GHC are Physical Education courses and FCST 1010 and 1020.

  2. A student may not accumulate more than 20 hours of academic credit before completing ALL Learning Support requirements. A student who accumulates twenty hours of academic credit and has not successfully completed required Learning Support courses may enroll ONLY in Learning Support courses until requirements are successfully completed.

  3. Students enrolled in both Learning Support and credit courses may not withdraw from Learning Support courses unless they also withdraw from credit courses.

  4. A student must complete requirements in any one area of Learning Support (English, reading, or math) in three attempts. For math, the Learning Support area at GHC consists of two courses.  Both math courses must be passed in the same three attempts.  If a student does not complete the area requirements in three attempts, the student will be suspended from institutions in the University System of Georgia for three years.  After three years, GHC may readmit the student or another USG institution may admit the student.

  5. Suspension for three years after three failed attempts may be appealed.  A student may appeal to receive a fourth attempt in a Learning Support area.  To be eligible to appeal, a student must be in an exit level course (ENGL 0099, READ 0099, or MATH 0099) and must have reached the attempt limit in only one Learning Support area. If granted the additional attempt, the student may enroll in only the required Learning Support course for the semester.  Attempts beyond four are not granted except in special circumstances such as disability documented with GHC's Student Support Services office.

  6. A transfer Learning Support student who has not exceeded three attempts may be granted semester hours to exit an area(s) if that student was making appropriate progress at the sending institution and is ready for the exit level course at GHC.

Students in a career program, rather than a transfer program, must check with an advisor to determine how these policies apply.

Receipt of any form of financial aid may require that students complete all Learning Support courses within a specified time. See the Director of Financial Aid for more information.
