GHC's Student
Newspaper Brings Home 16 Awards
The Georgia College Press Association
awarded the Six Mile Post, Georgia Highlands College's student newspaper,
16 honors in a variety of categories in the annual state contest presented
at the GCPA Press Institute in Athens Feb. 7. Two student newspaper
staff members were also elected to offices in the organization.
Awards recognizing the work
of the entire staff included first place in Best Campus Community Service
in both news and in sports; second place in general excellence, improvement,
advertising and features; and third place in editorials. Jeff
Capen of Cartersville won first place in news writing. Jordan
Penson, a student on the Floyd campus, took first place in sports photography,
second and third places in feature photography and third place in the
photo essay category. Floyd campus student Andrew Cole earned
second place in the review category, and James Swift (Floyd, Cartersville)
took second place in editorial writing and third place in the column
category. LaTonya Burrell, Six Mile Post editor, and Tyler Ashley,
assistant editor, received third place for their joint efforts in entertainment
feature writing.
In addition, Will Floyd was
elected GCPA treasurer and James Swift was chosen as a two-year-college
board member.
Also attending the institute
were writer and photographer Chiara Van Tubbvergen and faculty advisers
Dr. Kristie Kemper and Cindy Wheeler.
